Bees Across the Globe are Threatened by a New Virus Variant
Deformed wing virus strains are spreading worldwide. This virus causes honeybees to lose their wings and die. Bee colonies are being destroyed by the new strain of the virus, which has already replaced the original strain in Europe.
For the findings, the team of scientists at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg has analyzed the data on viral variations and their spread for over 20 years. The parasitic Varroa mite transmits the Deformed Wing Virus (DWV).
In addition to transmitting viruses, these mites also consume the honeybees' tissues. Honeybees are most at risk from the deformed wing virus.
To observe how naturally frequent this variation is they examined over 3,000 honeybees, bumblebees, and varroa mite’s records. This also highlighted the genetic material of viruses.
They concluded that it doesn't take long for the new variant to become the dominant form worldwide, as it has already gained a foothold in Europe.
There are many ways to protect honeybees from the Varroa mite and virus.
Keeping the hive clean is the most important issue. Using simple measures can prevent varroa infestations and wild bees that no one else is watching over one's colony
As pollinators of several wild and domesticated plants, honeybees contribute to fruit yield and biodiversity preservation. The disappearance of honeybee colonies has caused concern among experts from all over the world
